Apria Healthcare Notifying 2 Million People of Years-Old Data Breaches

Home medical equipment provider Apria Healthcare is notifying nearly two million individuals of personal information being compromised during data breaches that occurred in 2019 and 2021.

One of the largest providers of home respiratory services and medical equipment, Apria serves more than two million patients at 280 locations across the US.

This week, the company started notifying its patients that their personal information might have been exposed in older data breaches.

According to the notification letter sent to the impacted individuals, a copy of which was submitted to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, the first data breach occurred between April 5 and May 7, 2019.

The same unauthorized party, the company says, also accessed its systems between August 27 and October 10, 2021.

Apria says the data breaches were discovered after it received a notification of unauthorized access to its systems, but did not specify where that notification came from.

“Based on its investigation and discussions with law enforcement, Apria believes the purpose of the unauthorized access was to fraudulently obtain funds from Apria and not to access personal information of its patients or employees,” the notification letter reads.

The company says it found no evidence that the attackers removed funds or stole data. However, the threat actors did access a “small number of emails and files”.

“It was determined that information potentially accessed in the incident varied for each individual and may have included personal, medical, health insurance or financial information, and in some limited cases, Social Security numbers,” the company said in a data breach notice on its website.

Apria informed the Maine Attorney General that more than 1.86 million individuals were impacted by these incidents.
