Shift5, an operational technology (OT) cybersecurity company specializing in transportation infrastructure and weapons systems, this week announced raising $20 million in a Series A funding round.
The funding was led by 645 Ventures, with participation from Squadra Ventures, General Advance, and First In.
Rosslyn, VA-based Shift5 was founded by former members of the U.S. Army Cyber Command and its goal is to provide solutions for protecting planes, trains, tanks and other heavy machinery against cyber threats and operational failures.
The company has developed a solution that relies on an “Intake” component that can be deployed as hardware or software to capture data from vehicles. An algorithmic machine learning engine continuously monitors the data for potential threats.
“Shift5's data-driven solution integrates directly onto existing vehicle platforms, collecting and enriching data from on-board digital components and continuously monitoring data streams for security and operational anomalies. Its analytics platform provides cybersecurity intrusion detection, smarter maintenance, and improved operational intelligence for fleet operators,” the company said in a press release announcing the funding round.
It added, “Further capabilities allow for firmware and configuration attestation and the ability to protect assets by neutralizing malicious or corrupted payloads. Shift5 also provides specialized services for operational technology cybersecurity areas, such as vulnerability research and capability development.”
Shift5 says it has secured important government contracts, and its solutions have been used by several branches of the U.S. military, as well as major passenger rail systems in the United States.
